It is the hydraulic pump responsible for circulating fluid to maintain lubrication and pressure within the transmission. In the naturally aspirated 3.0L engine (2996cc I6) fitted to the listed BMW models, a failing pump can lead to slipping, harsh gear changes, or overheating.
