It serves as a tension guide for the serpentine belt on various 2.0L four-cylinder and 3.0L V6 engines, including the turbocharged diesel and supercharged gasoline variants found in the Discovery, LR4, and Range Rover models. A failing idler pulley often produces a squealing or chirping noise from the front of the engine as the bearing wears.
