A used OEM BMW trunk lid latch/lock, part number 8196401 (also replaces 7840617), secures the trunk closed and releases it when the handle or remote is activated. This genuine latch assembly, removed from a donor BMW, is the mechanical lock that engages the striker to keep the trunk shut. If this latch fails, the trunk may not close properly or could pop open while driving.
